Create a goal

Create a goal from scratch or from a template, choose the assignees, the responsible, the deadline and how the goal is measured.

Goals are created with the New Goal wizard. You pick a starting point (blank or a template), fill in who the goal is for and what it is about, choose how it will be measured, then check a summary before creating it.

Before you start

  • You need the Manager creator, Scoped admin, Admin or Super admin access level. On My Goals, employees and managers don't see the New Goal button. On Team Goals the button is shown to managers too, but only manager creators and above can save the goal: for other roles the wizard ends with "Error while creating your goal !".
  • Every goal needs a title, a deadline and an indicator.
  • If you want to reuse a definition, create a template first in Goal templates.

Where to start

The New Goal button is available in several places. The place you start from changes who can be picked as assignee and responsible:

Starting point Assignee(s) Responsible
Goals › My Goals Locked to you Defaults to your direct manager
An employee's goal list Locked to that employee Defaults to that employee's direct manager
Goals › Team Goals (button at the top) One or several people (multi-select) Locked to you
Goals › Team Goals, Create goal on a team member with no goal Pre-filled with that member Locked to you
Goals › Dashboard One person Empty (you can choose); if left empty, the assignee's direct manager is used
A finished skills review Locked to the reviewee Defaults to you

See Goals and skills reviews for the review case.

Step 0: choose how to create the goal

  1. Click New Goal. The window asks "How would you like to create your goal?".
  2. Choose one option:
    • Start from scratch: "Define a brand new goal from a blank slate."
    • Use existing template: "Pre-fill the goal with one of your saved templates."
  3. Click Continue.
  4. If you chose a template: pick the indicator type (True/False, Number, Percent or Multi-choice), then choose a template in Select a template (only templates of that type are listed). Click Next.

A template pre-fills the title, description, deadline and indicator. It never pre-fills people: you always choose the assignees yourself.

Step 1: Goal details

  1. Assignee(s): "This objective will be assigned to selected employees." Search and select in Search employees*. From Team Goals you can select several people (and Select all); the counter shows how many are selected.
  2. Responsible: "Defaults to the direct manager. You can assign someone else." Pick the person accountable for the goal, or leave it as it is.
  3. General information: "Choose a title, a description and a deadline."
    • Title* (required).
    • Description: a rich-text editor (bold, lists, links...).
    • Deadline* (required): pick a date. The deadline decides in which year the goal is listed.
  4. Click Next. If a required field is missing, the message "Please fill all required fields (*)." appears.

Step 2: How to measure

Under Indicator type ("Choose an indicator to monitor goal progress."), select one of the four types and fill in its values:

Type When to use it Values to fill in
True/False Non-quantifiable goals (done / not done). Starting value* and Goal value*: the two words that describe the goal (for example "Not done" and "Done"). The starting value is used by default, then the goal is reached when the current value is switched to the goal value.
Number Quantifiable goals. Starting value* and Goal value* as numbers (for example 0 and 20 new clients).
Percent Goals tracked as a percentage. Starting value* and Goal value* in percent (for example 0 and 100).
Multi-choice Goals qualified by a list of outcomes. A list of options: type each option, click Add an option to add more, and tick the checkbox of the option(s) that count as reaching the goal (target value). At least one option is required.

Click Next.

Tip: Use Number or Percent whenever you can: the progress bar on the goal page then shows how far along the goal is. True/False and Multi-choice goals are either reached or not.

Step 3: Summary

The last step shows the goal title and deadline, the assignee(s) and the responsible, and how the goal will be measured. Use Back to correct anything, then click Create.

The message "Your goal has been created successfully." confirms the creation.

What happens next

  • One goal per assignee: if you selected five people, five independent goals are created. Each one has its own value, status, comments and history.
  • Default status: each new goal gets the first status of your company's status list (by default Not started). See Goal statuses.
  • Notification: each assignee receives an in-app notification, a mobile push notification and an email "You've been assigned a new goal", with the goal title, description, deadline, current value and target value(s), and a View goal link. No notification is sent if you created the goal for yourself.
  • The goal appears in the assignee's My Goals, in the manager's Team Goals and on the Dashboard.

Common questions

I don't see the New Goal button.

Creating goals requires the Manager creator, Scoped admin, Admin or Super admin access level. Ask your admin if you need it.

Can I assign one goal to a whole team?

You can select several people at once from Goals › Team Goals, but OpenAleph creates a separate goal for each person, so everyone tracks their own progress. For a single objective shared by several people, use the OKR module.

The template I want isn't in the list.

The template list is filtered by indicator type. Pick the type that matches the template first. Deleted templates aren't offered.

Can I create a goal without a deadline?

No, the deadline is required for goals (it is optional only on templates).

Why can't I change the assignee in the form?

When you start from My Goals, from an employee's goal list or from a skills review, the assignee is fixed to that person. Start from Team Goals or the Dashboard to choose freely.
