Skills framework
Create skills and skill categories, assign skills to everyone or to specific job titles, set their weight and see which skills apply to each profile.
The skills framework is your company's catalogue of skills. It is the foundation of every skills review: when a cycle is launched, each reviewee's form is built from the skills that apply to their job title, grouped by skill category. Go to Skills › Framework to open the Skills grid framework page.
Before you start
- Everyone can open the framework and read it. Only Manager creators, Scoped admins and Admins see the New skill button and the edit menus.
- Job titles are managed in the company settings, not in the Skills module. Every member you want to review needs a job title on their profile. Use ⋮ › Manage job titles on the framework page to open the settings in a new tab (see Company settings).
The framework table
The table lists every skill with these columns:
| Column | Content |
|---|---|
| Skill | The skill name, with its category underneath. |
| Assigned to | Everyone (the skill applies to every job title) or the list of job titles it applies to. When a skill has several job titles, the first one is shown with a "+ n" counter; expand the row to see all of them. |
| Weight | From 1 to 10. |
| Description | The definition of the skill. Reviewers see it under the skill when they rate it. |
Use the search bar to find a skill by name, and the filter to narrow the list by Category or Job titles.
Manage skill categories
Every skill belongs to exactly one category. Categories define the sections of the review form and the groups of columns in the cycle results, and they are what the 4-box axes are scored from.
- On Skills › Framework, open the ⋮ menu next to New skill and choose Manage skill categories.
- In the Skill categories window:
- Rename a category directly in its field.
- Click Add description to give it a description (up to 400 characters), or Remove description to clear it.
- Drag a category by its handle to change the order. This order is the order of the sections in review forms and results.
- Click Add category to create a new one.
- Click Save.
Delete a category
- In Manage skill categories, click the bin icon on the category. You cannot delete the last remaining category.
- If the category contains skills, the window lists them and asks you to choose a replacement category in Select a category (Reassign a category to this skill (mandatory)). Confirm with Delete & Reassign. If it is empty, confirm with Delete.
Create a skill
- Go to Skills › Framework and click New skill.
- Under Skill details, fill in:
- Title (mandatory).
- The description, in the rich-text editor. Write a clear definition: reviewers rate against it.
- Category (mandatory). To create a new category, click the skills categories link under the field.
- Under Skill rating, choose the Skill weight (1 to 10). The weight defines how much the skill counts in review cycle analytics, including the 4-box matrix scores.
- Under Skill assignment, choose:
- Everyone: the skill is added to every reviewee's form, whatever their job title.
- Job-specific: pick one or more Job titles. The chosen titles appear under Selected job(s); remove one with its cross, or click Clear all. The Manage job titles link opens the company settings.
- Click Create. The message "Skill successfully created." confirms it.
Edit or delete a skill
- In the table, open the ⋮ menu at the end of the skill's row.
- Choose Edit to open the Edit skill window, change the fields and click Save.
- Or choose Delete, then confirm in Delete this skill ?.
Deleting a skill is permanent, but it does not affect previous or current skills reviews that already contain it: launched cycles keep a copy of their forms.
How the framework is used in reviews
- A skill assigned to Everyone appears in every form built from the framework.
- A Job-specific skill only appears for reviewees whose job title is in its list.
- In a review form, skills are grouped by category, in the category order of the framework.
- Changing the framework after a cycle is launched does not change that cycle: its forms were built at launch.
- Templates can combine framework skills with custom skills (see Review templates).
See the skills of a job title or a profile
- In the company settings, when you open a job title, an Associated skills card lists the skills attached to it. If there are none, a link takes you to the framework to assign some.
- On a member's profile (see Employee profile), the job information shows the skills that apply to their job title (job-specific skills and skills for everyone). Click Read skill details to open the Skill details window with each skill's assignment, weight and description, and a Go to skills framework link.
Common questions
I don't see the New skill button.
Creating skills requires the Manager creator role or above. Employees and managers can read the framework but not change it.
I can't edit a skill or category that a colleague created.
Manager creators can only edit what they created. Ask a scoped admin or an admin, or the person who created it.
A reviewee has no skills in their review form.
Check that the person has a job title on their profile, and that at least one skill is assigned to that job title or to Everyone. In automatic cycles, people without a job title are left out when you add them.
Does changing a skill's name or assignment change a launched cycle?
No. The questions of a launched cycle were built at launch, so renaming a skill or changing its job titles only affects cycles launched afterwards. The weight, however, is read from the framework when scores are calculated, so changing it can move the 4-box scores of existing cycles too. Avoid changing weights while a cycle is being analysed.
