A module is the core learning unit of OpenAleph Learn: a page of content with one evaluation. This page covers creating a module, its settings and publishing. Writing the content and building the evaluation are covered in The module editor and evaluations.

Before you start

Permissions: You need the Manager creator role or above (see Roles and access levels). A Manager creator can edit and delete the modules they created; Scoped admins, Admins and Super admins can edit any module of the company.

Create the module

  1. Go to Learn › My content and click Create.
  2. Select Module and click Continue.
  3. In Module setup, fill in:
    • Module title (required),
    • Description (optional, up to 400 characters, shown on the catalog card),
    • Language: "Select the language for this module" (pre-filled with your language). This becomes the module's primary language.
  4. Click Create. The module editor opens, with a default cover image.

You can also create a module directly from a training: in a section, Add module › Create a New Module. Once published, the module is automatically added to that section.

The module is created as a Draft. Nobody else sees it until you publish it. Everything you do in the editor is saved automatically (the top bar shows Saved). The back arrow at the top left leaves the editor.

The editor layout

On a computer, the editor has two panels:

  • Left panel, with two segments: AI Tools (see AI features) and Configure (the settings below).
  • Right panel, with two segments: Content and Evaluation, and a Language selector to switch between the module's languages.

On a phone, two tabs Settings and Content replace the panels. Publishing is only available on a larger screen.

Configure the module

Click Configure in the left panel.

General informations

  • Module title.
  • Description: click Add description / Show description / Hide description to edit it.
  • Cover image: a default image is set; use Update image to replace it ("Recommended format: JPG or PNG.", max 10 MB). You can reposition the image in its frame.

Estimated duration

"Add time needed to acquire this module." Enter a value and a Unit (Minutes or Hours). Without a value, the module counts as 30 minutes. Durations are added up to show playlist and training durations, and can be used as a filter in the catalog.

Tags

Themes help learners find your module and power Recommended themes in the catalog. "Choose from the list or type and press Enter to add a theme." Click the Add new theme field, pick an existing theme or type a new name and press Enter (a message confirms "New theme ... created"). Remove a theme with the cross on its tag.

Primary language

"Select the language used in this module." It is the reference language for translations.

Co-authors

"Invite collaborators to edit this module." Up to 10 co-authors, chosen among Manager creators, Scoped admins, Admins and Super admins.

  1. Click the button next to Co-authors. The window Manage co-authors lists the eligible colleagues, with Search and filters.
  2. Tick the people to add (untick to remove), then click Continue.
  3. Answer Send invitation emails? ("Do you wish to send invitation by email to co-authors? They will be sent now."): Yes, send emails notifies them now, in their own language ("You've been added as a co-author for ..."), No adds them silently.

The co-authors' avatars appear in the editor's top bar, and the module shows Multiple authors to learners. Co-authors who are Scoped admins, Admins or Super admins can open the editor; a Manager creator who isn't the module's creator can't open it.

Languages

"Manage languages in this module": the button opens the Languages window listing the module's languages. See AI features › Translate a module.

Duplicate and Delete

  • Duplicate: "Chose your title for this duplicate module. All of content will be duplicated." Enter a Module title and click Duplicate. The copy is yours.
  • Delete: moves the module to the deleted items (30 days). It is removed from playlists and trainings.

Preview

Click the eye icon in the top bar to preview the module as learners will see it, in the language currently selected.

Publish

  1. Click Publish in the top bar.
  2. OpenAleph checks that the title is filled, that an evaluation type is chosen ("Evaluation type must be set.") and that the required fields of the evaluation are filled (for example the Learning objectives of a self-assessment). Otherwise a message reads "Please fill required fields (*)."
  3. Confirm in Module will be published: "Your module will be added to the Catalog and will be visible to everyone." Click Publish.

The message "Module published!" appears and the module page opens. The module appears in the catalog (Modules, and New Modules to discover in everyone's My Learning). To have people take its evaluation, add it to a training.

Update a published module

Open the module (edit pencil on the module page, or the row in My content). The top bar button now reads Update. Your changes are kept in a draft; learners keep seeing the published version. When ready, click Update and confirm Module will be updated ("Your module will be updated in the Catalog and will be visible to everyone.") with Update. Learners who have the module open see a banner inviting them to reload.

Common questions

The Publish button is greyed out or does nothing.

Check the required fields (*), that an evaluation type is set in the Evaluation segment, and that you are on a computer or tablet screen.

Can a co-author edit or publish?

Co-authors who are Scoped admins, Admins or Super admins can open the editor, edit and publish, like for any module. A co-author with the Manager creator role gets Restricted Access when opening the editor of a module they didn't create: the module's creator (or an admin) makes the changes.

I edited a published module but learners still see the old version.

Click Update to publish your changes.

Does changing the evaluation type reset learners?

No. Learners who already acquired the module keep their status.
