Update key results

Key Results are where progress is recorded. Each time the measured value changes, the KR owner or an assignee updates the current value, ideally with a short comment. Progress then rolls up automatically to the objective and the plan.

Before you start

• You can update a Key Result if you are its owner, assignee or creator, if you are owner, assignee or creator of its objective, of its plan or (for a child KR) of its parent KR, or if you are a scoped admin or an admin.
• A Key Result that has child Key Results (a "global" Key Result) can't be updated directly: its value is calculated from its children. Update the child KRs instead.

Find your Key Results

• On OKRs › Objectives and KRs, keep Show only my OKRs on, expand an objective and find the KR in its list.
• On the home page, the "Key Results & goals" section lists your current and upcoming KRs.
• Click a Key Result (or View details) to open its page. The top of the page shows the path plan › objective › (parent KR) › KR.

Update the current value

1. Click Update current value (on the KR card or the KR page).
2. Enter the new value:
   • Number or Percentage: type the value in Current value (a whole number, zero or more);
   • True/False: choose True or False.
3. Optionally add a Comment to explain the change.
4. Click Save. "Key Result value has been updated." confirms it.

What happens next:

• The KR progress, its progress chart ("Progress during time"), its objective and its plan are recalculated.
• The change and its comment are logged in Last events as Current value updated.
• If the KR reaches 70% or more, OpenAleph asks "Mark Key Result as ‘Finished’?": "This Key Result has reached a progress of 70% or more, good job! Do you want to mark its status as ‘Finished’?" Click Mark finished or No, thanks.
• If the KR enters a new score band, its owner and assignees (except you) are emailed.

Scores and colours

Upcoming items show their progress in blue, since they haven't started yet.

Comment and read the history

• Click Add a comment on the KR (or type in Add a comment at the bottom of the Last events panel) to post a comment without changing the value.
• Open Last events (history icon in the top bar of the KR or plan page, or the Last events and comments block of the KR card) to read the timeline: values updated, titles, owners, descriptions, indicator types and statuses changed, Key Results added or deleted, and comments.
• A comment can be deleted (Delete comment, then confirm "Comment will be deleted") by its author, by the owner of the item, or by an admin.

Objectives and plans have the same Last events panel and can be commented on too.

Mark a Key Result as finished

1. Open the KR's three-dot menu (or the More menu on its page) and choose Mark as 'Finished'.
2. Confirm "Mark Key Result as ‘Finished’?": Finish all also finishes its child Key Results; Finish this Key Result finishes it alone.

A finished KR no longer appears under the Current status filter. To reopen it, choose Mark as 'Current/Upcoming': it goes back to Current or Upcoming depending on its start date. Owners and assignees are emailed when a KR is finished.

Common questions

The Update current value button is missing.

Either you don't have the rights on this KR (you are not its owner, assignee or creator, nor involved in its objective or plan), or the KR has child Key Results and is calculated automatically.

My value is refused.

Number and Percentage values must be whole numbers, zero or more.

Progress shows more than 100%.

For Number and Percentage KRs, progress can exceed 100% when the current value goes beyond the target. In the objective and plan averages, each KR counts for 100% at most.

Does updating a KR notify people?

Only when the KR enters a new score band (Some progress, Good progress, Fully achieved), and never the person who made the update.
